Junior Public Speaking

16/6/2016

Picture
The school held its final public speaking event of the year last week. The Partnership Primary and Junior Inter House both produced speeches of the highest calibre. Mr Quail, as chairman, Mrs Evelyn Neilson, Depute Head Teacher, and Mr Andrew Keating, had the difficult task of judging.
Two of our primaries took part: Stephanie Neill and Aidan Dickson (Thornlie) and Stephanie Conner (Newmains). These fine orators delivered a wonderful programme of insightful, humorous, reflective and challenging speeches. At the end of a really tight contest, Stephanie Neill received her individual award and the Public Speaking Shield for Thornlie. In the Inter House event, Stuart Coombes, Alexandra Smith and Lucy Dunning, represented Houldsworth, and Curran’s team was Laura Kirk, Sarah Chance and James Kilpatrick.

The S1/S2 event more than matched the quality of the opening contest, with James Kilpatrick declared the individual winner with a moving and challenging speech on the sometimes tragic impact caused by thoughtless and bullying behaviour. And, strong performances from the Houldsworth team, allowed that House to win the Junior Quaich.
Well done to Miss Claire Douglas, Principal Teacher of English, who organised the event, and who worked with all Primary and Junior speakers in preparation for the event.  And, a special thank you to the many teachers, parents and friends who provided an appreciative audience for these very talented speakers.
