Dragons Den

10/11/2015

S3 pupils Cara Sinnett, Iona Orr and Laura Douglas are the well-deserved winners of the 2015 Dragons’ Lair competition. Fourteen North Lanarkshire secondary schools attended the competition, 25 business plans were submitted, and six finalists were chosen. The competition was strong between the six finalists and the Dragons commented on how well prepared and how good the girls' presentation and 'Beauty Bus' business idea were. The girls performed extremely well under a grilling of questions from the Dragons and each won an iPad Air as well as £500 towards school funds. For more pictures click here

Dragons’ Lair is an initiative aimed at encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship in North Lanarkshire’s young people. It seeks to introduce them to the world of business, its importance to the economy and as a possible career option they may not have considered. Having previously been aimed at S5/6 pupils, this is the first year that the initiative has been aimed at S3 pupils in North Lanarkshire schools. Pupils were asked to think of an innovative business idea and create a business plan, which was then submitted to advisors from Business Gateway who scored them and short-listed to a final six. The final event took place on Wednesday 4th November 2015 at Business Gateway, Coatbridge, where the best six business ideas were pitched to a panel of Dragons. The panel of four Dragons consisted of local international business owners from the Lanarkshire area: Scott Web of UK Steel Enterprise; Richard McCombe of Maticmedia; Denise Canning of 121 HR Solutions Ltd; and Joanne Telfer of Ten Live. www.nlcdragonslair.co.uk.
Their business idea ‘The Beauty Bus, a luxury brand with a social conscience’, is a Social Enterprise that offers a wide range of services mainly focusing on nails, eyelashes and brows. As well as being a profit making mobile salon for general customers at weekends, its other aim is to reach out and help the disadvantaged during the week. The campaign is aimed at single mums, the elderly, and patient in hospitals, especially women with cancer who have lost a lot of confidence. These women would be treated at a discounted price so they could have some well-deserved, affordable time to themselves to socialise and relax. At weekends the Beauty Bus offers both a drop-in and appointment service to paying customers at shopping centres in the Central Belt and also offers pamper parties for birthdays and hen nights.
