The school fell silent at exactly 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month, as staff and pupils alike remembered the fallen. Many teachers chose to incorporate Armistice activities into their lessons on the day, allowing the pupils to fully understand why the silence takes place. They added to that display this year, by highlighting on a map of the world, where many of the staff’s family members had fought in the war. Mrs Evelyn Neilson, depute head, immediately recited John McCrae’s, ‘In Flanders Fields’ to finish the tribute. Niamh Speirs, Liam Dunnachie and Raina Owens were Houldsworth’s winning three, finishing just ahead of Claire Megahy, Leah Grant and Aaron McArthur. Cara Sinnett was crowned this year’s Intermediate winner with a serious and poignant tribute to her friends entitled ‘The Warped Reflections’. Liam Dunnachie delivered a masterful performance with ‘Aspire’, a comical speech with a serious subject. Its main objective was to raise awareness of the charity, ‘Aspire’. Dedicated to raising funds for people with spinal injuries, Liam has been a supporter of the charity for many years. Mr Quail, the school’s Head Teacher, was joined at the judges’ table by Mrs Evelyn Neilson, Depute Head, and Miss Marie McGough, former school librarian.
