Higher Mathematics

The Higher Mathematics course develops, deepens and extends learners' mathematical rigour and the ability to use precise and concise mathematical language and techniques.

Pupils who complete the Higher Mathematics course successfully are expected to have a competence and a confidence in applying Mathematical techniques, manipulating symbolic expressions and communicating with accuracy in the solution of problems.

Entry to the course
This is at the discretion of the school, however we recommend that pupils should have obtained an A or B pass at National 5 to progress to the Higher Mathematics course. 
Course content 
The course comprises of 3 units:

Expressions and Functions

  • Trigonometric expansions and identities
  • Trigonometric graphs
  • Wave function
  • Graphs of functions
  • Composite and inverse functions
  • Logs and exponentials
  • Vectors 
Relationships and Calculus

  • ​Differentiation 
  • Polynomials 
  • Quadratic theory
  • Solving trigonometric equations
  • Integration
Applications

  • The straight line
  • Circle
  • Recurrence relations
  • Applying differential calculus
  • Areas under and between curves
Homework
Homework is an essential part of the Higher course and will often take the form of completion of exercises started in class.
Formal homework exercises are assigned twice a week, on a Monday and Thursday. These exercises consolidate the course material and prepare candidates for the final exam. Pupils receive feedback on their work and advice on how to improve understanding.

Assessment
The Higher Mathematics course is assessed by means of an external exam completed in the May diet of SQA examinations. 
The format of the external examination has varied over the years but the content has remained consistent. 

From session 2018-19, the Higher Mathematics exam will be extended in length:

Paper 1 - Non-calculator    70 marks -  1 hour 30 minutes
Paper 2 - Calculator            80 marks -  1 hour 45 minutes


Exam dates 2018-19

Higher Mathematics 1 Non-calculator paper is on Thursday 2 May 2019 from 09:00 to 10:30.
Higher Mathematics 2 paper is on Thursday 2 May 2019 from 11:00 to 12:45.

Progression
​Successful completion of this course may lead to further study at Advanced Higher level.
