Curricular Area: Technologies Course Title: N4 Business
Course Description: The Course aims to enable students to develop:
knowledge and understanding of business concepts in a range of contexts
awareness of the processes and procedures businesses use to ensure customers’ needs are met
enterprising skills, and adopt enterprising attributes, by participating in practical activities in realistic business situations
financial awareness through a business context
an insight into the impact of the economy on businesses and our daily lives, thus gaining economic awareness
The 2 units that students will cover:
Business in Action
Influences on Business
Assessment Assessment of the 2 units will be carried out throughout the year through various activities such as in writing (multiple choice and exam type questions); demonstrated by students using their ICT skills; and by orally responding to question and answer sessions in class. An additional Added Value Unit will be completed to further demonstrate the required competency in outcomes and assessment standards. This additional unit gives students the opportunity to research an aspect of a business that they choose.
Possible next level of study in S4-6 N5 Business Management, Higher Business Management.
Wider Achievement Opportunities Learners who have completed the Course will be able to utilise the acquired Business Management and Entrepreneurial related knowledge, understanding and skills at home, in the wider community and, ultimately, in employment or self-employment. Its use of real-life contexts makes it relevant to the world of work and the course presents a variety of opportunities for students to make their own decisions about their learning and how they present their work in class, develop their ability to work independently as well as part of a team, and develop leadership skills and opportunities. The Course makes an important contribution to general education through developing a knowledge of business which will stand learners in good stead regardless of the career path they ultimately choose.

Course Description: The Course aims to enable students to develop:
knowledge and understanding of the ways in which society relies on business to satisfy our needs and wants
an insight into the systems organisations use to ensure customers’ needs are met
enterprising skills and attributes by providing them with opportunities to
explore realistic business situations
financial awareness through a business context
an insight into how organisations organise their resources for maximum
efficiency and improve their overall performance
an awareness of how external influences impact on organisations
The topics that students will cover:
Understanding Business
Management of marketing
Management of operations
Management of people
Management of finance
Assessment Students will have a final exam worth 75% as well as a Business Management Assignment worth 25% of their overall grade which is prepared towards the end of the course then submitted to the SQA for marking. Possible next level of study in S4-6 Higher Business Management.

Course Description: The Course aims to enable learners to develop and extend:
knowledge and understanding of the ways in which society relies on business to satisfy our needs
an understanding of a range of methods businesses use to ensure customers’ needs are met
understanding of enterprising skills and attributes by providing them with opportunities to study relatively complex business issues
understanding of business-related financial matters
an understanding of the ways businesses can use resources to achieve maximum efficiency
an understanding of the steps taken by business to improve overall performance and effectiveness
knowledge and understanding of the main effects that external influences, such as economic impact and sustainability, have on organisations
The 3 units that students will cover:
Understanding Business
Management of People and Finance
Management of Marketing and Operations
Assessment Students will have an external final exam worth 70% as well as a Business Management Assignment worth 30% of their overall grade.
